Go Green

The earth isn't disposable. Neither is a Subaru.

Subaru Goes Green

First, we build vehicles for maximum durability, because more time spent on the road is less time in a landfill. It's why 94% of the vehicles we've built in the last 10 years are still on the road today. We also work diligently to cut waste before the car ever rolls out of the factory. In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) became the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to reach zero landfill status-nothing from its manufacturing efforts ever goes into a landfill. Subaru facilities in Japan have achieved similar goals in reusing and recycling. And, because clear skies are just as important as clean landscapes, Subaru is one of the few to achieve Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) status and SmartWay®3 certification. It achieves such cleanliness and efficiency without the negative environmental impact required to manufacture many vehicles with battery-based drive systems, and without compromising performance and versatility.

We think before we print.

Next time you pick up a Subaru brochure, know that our environmentally sensitive printing process has reduced the amount of trees, water and energy used in our brochure production. In fact, since 2008, we have saved 1,558 trees, 653,189 gallons of water and close to 1 billion BTUs of energy. Every brochure we print is produced using this 'Green Printing Process' and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. We're even using more environmentally responsible, vegetable-based inks. So whether you download a PDF or get a brochure, know that we have taken steps to minimize our impact on the Earth.

Do what comes naturally.

While you are out there enjoying our beautiful Earth, know that Subaru is helping to protect it by supporting groups who care for the environment and making our vehicles in the most responsible way. In 1993, we adopted an Environmental Conservation Program with the goal of building cleaner vehicles and a cleaner company.

Zero Landfill

In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) became the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to reach zero landfill status-nothing from its manufacturing efforts ever goes into a landfill.

Protecting Wildlife

In 2003, SIA became the first U.S. automotive assembly plant to be designated a wildlife habitat.
Subaru shares the site with numerous natural residents including deer, blue herons and beavers.

Durability and a low impact on the environmentSmartWay US EPA Certified
have long made Subaru vehicles the choice of
drivers who want to enjoy the beauty of the
natural world. By eliminating pollutants during
the production process and creating efficient,
low-emission vehicles, Subaru works diligently
to protect that beauty and the earth we all share.

For select Forester 2.5X, Legacy 2.5i and Outback 2.5i models, the SmartWay mark is based on the vehicle's officially certified exhaust emissions and greenhouse gas scores.
