Buying a new (or new to you) car can be a pretty taxing task all in itself. Not even adding in the taxes, fees, delivery charges, etc. etc. etc. At Saint J Subaru we understand this and one of the ways we are here to help you is to let you know that Non-Vermont Residents don’t have worry about paying Vermont sales tax just because our dealership is in Vermont. We have you covered. Don’t limit your car shopping experience to your state because you are afraid we will charge you Vermont sales tax on top of all of the taxes that your state requires you to pay already.
If you live in New Hampshire, you don’t have to pay sales tax. All you are responsible for is your vehicle registration fees, titling fees, and the fees for your license plate.
If you live in Maine, you are responsible for your registration fees, excise taxes, and sales tax (which varies by municipality/county)
If you live in New York, you are responsible for the fees for your vehicle plates, title certificate, and any sales tax (which varies by purchase price and locality). There’s a 2-year minimum fee for a vehicle that has 6 or more cylinders, or for an electric vehicle. If you are a resident of New York there are a few other fees that your county may require you to pay as well. Some counties require taxes and supplemental fees for residents.
If you live in Massachusetts, you have to pay sales tax of 6.25% of the sale price if made by a dealer. There are some exceptions to this rule, but unfortunately they do not apply to buying a car from us.
If you are a Vermont Resident, you are responsible to pay the required Vermont sales tax. Purchase and use tax is due at the time of registration and/or title at a percentage of the purchase price or the average trade-in value (according to the NADA), whichever is greater, minus value of trade-in vehicle or any other allowable credit. If you are a Vermont resident that is interested in leasing, the taxes are calculated by us. If you end up buying the car from us at the end of your lease period, you will pay taxes again. There are a few exemptions to this rule, and we do our best to find them out and pass the savings on to you, but it doesn’t hurt to look up what could apply to you. See a list of those exemptions here: http://dmv.vermont.gov/registrations/drivers/tax#exemptions.
We also allow you to roll your taxes and fees all into your loan so you can literally buy a car with no money out of pocket and have all of your taxes and registration fees taken care of for you, if that makes it easier for you. We try to make our customers happy with an easy car buying process and feel that this is something that our already broad out of state customer base not only appreciates but keeps coming back because of it.
