Subaru BRZ's Spec Sheet Puts It In Middle of Sub-$30,000 Sports Car Market

The BRZ is an interesting addition to the market because of its compact size and normally aspirated four-cylinder engine. In that arena its main competition is the rear-wheel drive Mazda MX-5 Miata convertible and front-wheel drive coupes Scion tC and Kia Forte Koup SX. The BRZ slots in the middle of the three in size: it's about 10 inches longer than the Miata, eight inches shorter than the tC, and 10 inches shorter than the Forte. The same is true of weight?the BRZ is 250 pounds heavier than an MX-5, 150 lighter than the Forte, and nearly 400 lighter than the tC?and in power-to-weight ratios: it carries one more pound per horsepower than the Miata, one fewer than the Forte, and 3.5 fewer than the tC. Keep in mind, of course, that both the tC and the Forte start under $20,000, something the BRZ likely won't do.

Once you expand the BRZ's competition to the crop of sub-$30,000 compact cars, the competition muddies a bit: with a predicted price of somewhere in the mid-20s, the BRZ will slot against turbocharged competitors like the Volkswagen GTI, Mazdaspeed 3, Mini Cooper S Coupe, and Hyundai Genesis Coupe, as well as V-6 competitors like the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang.
It's here that the BRZ has its work cut out for it: competitors bring as much as 125 more horsepower to the table (a base Chevrolet Camaro has 323 hp underhood), but the car's diminutive size and low weight should prove to be an advantage. If you compare the BRZ to its equivalent from Hyundai, the Genesis Coupe, the Subaru's super light curb weight (it weighs 2690 pounds, 604 fewer than the Genesis) means it has a much better power to weight ratio (13.65 lbs/hp versus 15.69 for the Hyundai) than the Korean coupe.

Obviously, the proof is in the pudding, by which we mean that the battle of the $25,000 sports cars will be more than just a numbers game. We'll see that competition?no doubt a thrilling one?as soon as the BRZ makes its official American debut at January's Detroit show.

2012 Subaru Impreza: Now Driven Out Of New England

NEW YORK - Subaru is a manufacturer near and dear to New England's heart. It's almost as if they were designed solely for this region. As the old joke goes, the Subaru is the state bird of New Hampshire.

Fans - mostly New Englanders and anyone in the snow belt - have loved them for their distinctive design and tough all-wheel-drive systems, but in recent years Subaru has begun to homogenize its cars to make them more appealing to the rest of the country. Case in point: The 2012 Subaru Impreza.

At its launch to the media in Manhattan last month, company executives said the previous generation model was, to paraphrase, ugly. And like all Subarus, it consumed gas at a horrible rate for a small car.

Let's address the latter point first. The 2012 Subaru Impreza, now in its fourth generation, gets the new 2.0-liter Boxer engine (the cylinders fire horizontally, unlike the upright design of an inline or "V" layout) that debuted in the 2011 Subaru Forester. It features a longer stroke, double overhead camshafts, and dual active valve control system for efficient performance and low emissions.

All that translates into an EPA-rated 27-mpg city and 36-mpg highway rating when equipped with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). For comparison's sake, the 2011 model with the 2.5-liter engine was pegged at 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway with its four-speed automatic.

In spite of a smaller gas tank, the highway cruising range for new Impreza is 523 miles, up 67 miles from the 2011 Impreza,. That gives the current Impreza a better range than the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Mazda 3 and Hyundai Elantra - none of which offer all-wheel-drive.

The 2011 Impreza, however, had a bigger engine with more power. The previous model had 170 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque compared to the new Impreza's 148 horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque from its smaller engine. Yet the new car is a half-second faster from 0-60 mph with the CVT.

It's still not right to use the word fast and Impreza in the same breath (that 0-60 time is 9.8 seconds, barely quicker than a Prius), but the new transmission provides the smoothest acceleration of any CVT I've tested under hard acceleration. Like any CVT, though, it can get caught looking for shifts under certain conditions like hilly terrain. It's not a deal breaker but it is noticeable.

Two different versions of Subaru's standard all-wheel-drive are available, depending on transmission. Models with 5-speed manuals feature "Continuous AWD" with a viscous-coupling locking center differential that splits power 50/50 front to rear. Models with the CVT use "Active AWD" which varies the power split based on acceleration, deceleration, and available traction. Both systems power four wheels at all times.

Subaru let automotive journalists flog the Impreza over 250 miles in three states, including a stop at Camp Hi-Rock in Mount Washington, Mass., which had an impressive, twisty gravel road that just made you want to throw the rear end sideways. Fortunately, the all-wheel-drive and electronic stability control stepped in at the right time.

Subaru Will Introduce It's First Hybrid Vehicle In 2012

According to the latest reports, it appears that Subaru will add its first hybrid vehicle in 2012 in order to meet the new emissions regulations and to improve the fuel economy average of its fleet.

Ikuo Mori, president of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., maker of Subaru brand cars, said that the gasoline-electric drivetrain will be offered as a version of an existing model line. Although an U.S. debut was not yet confirmed, Mori said that the new car will help Subaru meet tougher U.S. fuel economy that are set to begin in 2016. We have to tell you that the new hybrid drivetrain will be built using technology from Toyota Motor Corp., which owns 16.5 percent of Fuji Heavy.Information provided by: http://www.4wheelsnews.com/subaru-will-introduce-its-first-hybrid-vehicle-in-2012/

Subaru Continues To Charge Ahead In The Key U.S. Market

Official figures have not been released yet but already Subaru maker Fuji Heavy Industries has been recognized for having recorded the only increase in US sales this year, aside from Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. CEO Ikuo Mori said that Fuji Heavy continues to gain a stronger foothold in the key US market with sales rising by about 20%.

However, he says that company has a lot of work to do in order to raise its earning power. Fuji Heavy, owned 16.5 percent by Toyota Motor Corp., currently has the same market share as mass-volume brand Volkswagen AG.

Subaru defies the recession in the United States

New-vehicle sales are currently suffering but Subaru of America has beaten the odds and racked up huge US sales gains. The credit goes to a decision four years ago to drop a strategy to go upmarket.

Instead, Subaru, since 2006, has cut prices, said goodbye to quirky styling, and focused on the safety and practical aspects of its five vehicles. Dealers also have been given a voice in making important product decisions. These moves helped propel Subaru to become the best-performing brand in 2009, up 14% in a market that's down 24%.

The Only Manufacturer With All Vehicles Rated a "Top Safety Pick"

Subaru of America announced today that it has been recognized as the only manufacturer with all of its vehicles named a TOP SAFETY PICK by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For those who don't know, The TOP SAFETY PICK recognizes vehicles that show the best protection for people in front, side, rear, and now rollover crashes.

Geneva Motor Show:
Subaru unveiled at this year's Geneva Motor Show its latest variant in its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Impreza range, the Impreza XV Crossover.  The new car combines the agile road performance with the recreational styling that made the earlier generation Impreza RV and Sportswagon major Subaru successes. It comes with new wheel arch extensions, roof rails, grille, and interior trim.

Subaru Plants Struggling To Keep Up With Demand

All car makers would want to have Subaru's main problem which is keeping up with the high demand for a product. The Outback wagon has had tremendous success ever since it debuted last summer.
It's no wonder that Subaru got the highest percentage US sales increase of any brand last year. In fact, Subaru is expected to continue to outpace the market for the rest of 2010. Starting December, Subaru of Indiana Automotive has boosted the speed of production at its plant for two times now. There are plans to increase the pace again in April and another time in July, with each push standing for a 5%-6% increase in line speed.
